Moving to College

If you’ve looked at your calendars lately, you might have noticed something strikingly surprising. It’s the middle of July. Summer is half-over. For some of you this doesn’t affect you too much, BUT if you are a student, unfortunately it does. This is a blog about moving, so what does the end of summer have to do with moving? Well… it has everything to do with all those students moving into their dorms- especially freshmen.

The best advice we can give you is to begin your planning early. As in now. It is the middle of July, time to get a move on it! Literally speaking.

First things first. Find out what your new residency provides. Do they provide basic furniture? Is there a refrigerator? Do you even need one? What size sheets will you need? Extra long? Find out as much as you possibly can.

Find out what you can and cannot bring. Some schools do not allow certain electronics such as toasters in the dorm. Halogen lights and two-pronged power strips can be dangerous as well. Here is another thing to ask. Does your residency allow lofting?

Make a packing list. Put on this everything you think you might need, even if you do not own certain items yet. Then, once your list is made, go online and research what others suggest you pack. Talk to others who have moved and then edit your list.

Find your roommate on Facebook. We know this isn’t an actual moving tip, but getting knowing a little bit about your future roommates will help you in your transition process.

Now. Go shopping and be sure to ask these final questions before packing

  • Is it okay to ship some of your stuff to your dorm before you move?
  • Will there be people there to help you?
  • Should you label all of your stuff?
  • When is your move in time?
  • Where is your exact residency and what is the process

That’s it for now… HAPPY PACKING!
