Celebrating The Holidays In The Twin Cities

The Twin Cities region is a delightful place to be during the holidays. The festive, family-oriented activities are sure to put you in the holiday spirit. We’ve listed some of our favorite events as well as terrific resources to locate any activity around the region.

Holiday lights on display

Holiday Lights in the Park: This annual event features over 60 displays, with light tunnels, dancing snowmen, and flashing sugarplums. This fundraiser benefits Union Gospel Mission, the Saint Paul Police Foundation, and the Saint Paul Parks Conservancy.

Holidazzle Village: Located in Loring Park, this display is free to the public. The Holidazzle Village will include a variety of entertainment opportunities and festivities for all ages to enjoy throughout the season.

Family fun events

Wells Fargo Winter Skate: Rice Park is transformed into a winter skating wonderland offering daily open skating sessions throughout the season. Bring your own skates or rent a pair for a small fee.

Night Trains at Twin Cities Railroad Museum (Bandana Square – St. Paul): Night Trains Season is a special time at the museum. Dozens of model railroad layouts become magical with the lights turned down allowing the buildings and street lights to glow. Then watch for the specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains to pass through the villages.

Macy’s Downtown Santaland Display: The classic Macy’s 8th-floor display will be the best place to see Santa Claus make his annual appearance to gather the holiday wish lists of children of all ages. Experience the animated story of Santa’s elves at the North Pole as they prepare for Christmas.

Holidays are a great time for live performances

A Christmas Carol (The Guthrie): This holiday season marks the 41st annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, an annual favorite at the Guthrie Theater.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (Stages Theater): A favorite for 50 years and kids of all ages,  this classic stage performance brings Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the whole Peanuts gang together to explore the real meaning of Christmas. Relive the warmth of the season in this classic production featuring all the songs you remember.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Xcel Energy Center): The 2015 Winter Tour is based on TSO’s multi-platinum DVD and long running PBS fundraiser, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve.”  Follow the journey of a young runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater to escape the cold where she encounters ghost-like visions from that concert hall’s past.
