Expert advice on moving

As professional movers we work with lots of different people, in lots of different places and under lots of different circumstances.  However, there are a few things we wish all our customers knew before we show up for the move.  So we’re offering this series of insider tips that will help us to help you in providing you with the best possible moving experience.  In case you missed them check out our first article for Tips 1-4 then jump over to our second article for Tips 5-8.  As promised, this article will feature tips about money & moving.

Tip #9 Ask about transfer fees

Be aware that utility companies often charge transfer fees to move service.  If you are moving locally, even a few blocks away and want your phone service moved be sure to ask for specifics.  Some electric companies have been known to charge for disconnect and reconnection regardless of the distance.  Be sure to factor in these costs to your moving expenses.

Tip #10 Understand estimates

We do our best to give a realistic, accurate estimate and manage the move efficiently.   Our estimates are based on a couple of factors such as the size of your home, the number of hours, movers and trucks, special packing equipment and packing materials. The actual cost can be greatly affected by your preparedness and how ready your belongings are to be loaded on to the truck. For example, if we arrive and find that bookcases and cabinets or the garage need to be packed then your final cost will be different from our estimate.

Tip #10.5 To tip or not to tip?

Most people don’t realize that movers typically receive tips after a job well done much like a valet, doorman or taxidriver.  It’s considered part of the pay they expect to receive based on performance.  Some basic tipping guidelines are $10-$20 per mover for an in-state or local move and $3-5 per hour per mover or 10% of your moving bill if you are moving long distance. These are just guidelines but the point is to know that tipping the team is appropriate and expected.  And for a team that has worked hard and demonstrated professionalism a tip is a welcome token of appreciation.

Money is a key factor for many of our customers when it comes to making decisions like hiring a mover, DIY (do it yourself) or some combination of the two.  The Insider Tips we provided in this series are good things to know regardless of how you decide to move.  Read Tips 1-4 and Tips 5-8  then let us know which one surprised you the most.  We welcome your feedback!
