Retiring and Ready To Move? 3 Things To Consider

retirement and movingThis is your year!  The year you finally get to retire.  You’ve worked long and hard to get to this point and your new found flexibility will present you with some options.  For many the opportunity to move to their ‘dream’ location is a major benefit of retirement.  The folks at AARP put together a report about the most important factors when choosing a place to  live out your Golden Years.  We’ve summarized the top three points for you to consider.

Neighborhoods

No surprise here – the majority of seniors polled value secure neighborhoods, safety, good schools, safe streets for walking, and affordable housing as important community qualities.  Personal preference does play a big part in selecting a location.  If you are considering a move to a new area it’s advisable to visit and learn first hand about the community before you make the move. Make a few trips during different seasons of the year to see the full spectrum of life and activity.

Amenities

The experts recommend considering both your current overall health and physical capabilities as well as what the future might bring.   Look for qualities like ample green space and year round outdoor activities suitable for seniors of any age.  Another aspect to consider are communities that will enhance personal independence and foster resident engagement in community civic, economic and social life along with robust educational programs.  Programs in any of these areas are positive signs of a vibrant senior community.

Transportation

Access to transportation and amenities within walking distance will be key both today and as your needs change.  Your mobility needs will change over time and many of the points we already mentioned are important to keep in mind.  Qualities like safe streets for walking, sidewalks and traffic, low crime rates and amenities like grocery stores and pharmacies that are within a comfortable walking distance will extend your independence long term. Public transportation that is reliable and safe should be a key consideration as well.

Moving to a new location for your retirement is exciting to consider. Factors such as family and a network of friends play a very important role in making this decision.  Make a list of the qualities that are most important to you and rate them based on ‘must have’ and ‘nice to have’.  Use this template as a guide to choosing the best retirement community for you.  Then call us to make your move as stress-free as possible.
