Tips for Avoiding Scam Movers

We have all heard stories of moving nightmares, broken and lost items, late arrivals, delayed deliveries, and surprise surcharges. Handing over all your worldly belongings to strangers and trusting them to safely deliver your items to your new home requires a leap of faith. However, by following a few guidelines when choosing a professional moving company that leap won’t be on faith alone.

Good Stuff Moving is Minnesota's moving company

When choosing a moving company for your relocation there are several factors to consider. Most people start by comparing prices but that is just the beginning. Accepting the lowest bid is tempting because no one wants to pay more to a moving company then necessary. However, the old adage remains true, you get what you pay for. Adversely, going with the highest bid perhaps offered by a big national moving company might not ensure a smooth transition either. Moving experts recommend getting at least 3 quotes or estimates for your move. Beware of moving company quotes that are significantly lower than their competitors. Chances are they are low-balling on the bid but will tack on a bunch of surcharges upon delivery.

Ask around for referrals and read reviews

Realtors are a great resource for finding a good moving company. Friends, family and co-workers can all provide leads on finding the right movers. Word of mouth is the best advertising a moving company can get. Thanks to websites like Yelp and Angie’s List  consumers can get an idea of a company’s commitment to servicing their needs. When you get leads investigate the company. Ask about their claims process, even the best movers can have an accident. Make sure the moving company is properly licensed and insured. Contact the Better Business Bureau and  professional associations to ensure the company is in good standing.

Get an onsite estimate

In most cases moving companies will send a representative to your property to assess the contents of your home and provide you with an accurate estimate. If an onsite inspection isn’t possible take the time to make a detailed list of your contents. Know the square footage of your home and note any obstacles that might make the move harder, like 3 flights of stairs or an ascending driveway. The more information you provide to the moving company representative the more accurate the quote will be. If you are packing your items number them all and keep a corresponding list so you can be sure everything is delivered. If the movers are packing for you they should provide a similar list of your items.

Get a contract that covers all aspects of the move

A reputable moving company will provide a contract that covers all costs associated with the move. Each fee should be spelled out. You should be able to see each charge as well as any possible overages. Some moving companies will demand a gratuity that is not covered in the contract so ask about gratuities. Beware of companies that want allot of money up front. A deposit may be required to reserve the movers and the trucks but it should not be more than 25% of the total move cost, and it should be refundable if the movers fall through.

Inspect the trucks and equipment

If the moving truck is old and dirty it’s a good indication of how the company conducts business. If they don’t treat their stuff well how will they treat your stuff? You will be paying for the fuel so make sure the tires are properly filled and that the truck is in good working order.
